Principle of pooled-template metagenomic sequencing. Sample DNA extracts from a population of interest are pooled together according to a pre-specified variable of interest (such as treatment or time-point). Metagenomic sequencing is then performed on pooled samples and regions that discriminate between populations are determined. Targeted assays (such as qPCR) are then performed on individual samples for gene specific enumeration
